01. New You Ahead - "When I look into a woman's hair I look into her very soul," pronounced the great Antoine, the first and, at seventy-six, the most enduring of the twentieth century's special breed of internationally famous hair stylists.

"She does not even have to speak. I can tell at a glance if she is in love or beloved," he continued, as, deftly flicking a comb through a model's hair, he brought her features into new focus.

02. Past + Present - Hairdressers have always moved among commoners and kings, but they have achieved their greatest popularity at three points in history: shortly before the decline of Greece, just before the French Revolution—and today.

Study the greatest art works of all time and it will be obvious that there have always been great hairdressers. In fact, some of the greatest hair stylists of all time never touched comb or scissors to a woman's hair. They are the painters: Botticelli, da Vinci, Giorgione, Watteau, Titian, Ghirlandaio, and Raphael. Beautifully arranged hair plays a major part in many of their finest works.

03. Interview: Kenneth - Perhaps the most controversial coiffeur of all on the New Frontier is Kenneth. One of his styles became almost a political issue in the early days of the Kennedy Administration. Hair stylist to the First Lady, Marilyn Monroe and Jean Kerr, he is also the first hair couturier to win an American Fashion Critics Award.

Tall, thirty-ish, well-mannered and much more handsome than photographs suggest, Kenneth recently led a beauty mission around the world, stopping along the way to talk coiffures with other such first and beautiful ladies as Queen Farah Dibah of Iran, Queen Sikirit of Thailand and Her Ladyship Muna of Jordan.

04. Facts Of Hair - Throughout the ages, brightly colored hair has inspired the passionate lovers and great poets: Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton.

Artists of such monumental stature as Botticelli, Titian, and da Vinci could have made fortunes as hairdressers. In fact, some of their most breathtakingly beautiful creations are still being copied today.

05. Grow Accustomed - The shape of your face plays a vital role in the shaping of your most flattering hair style. But it is not the only featured player in this production.

Despite all the pat charts you've seen on what to do if your face is round as the moon or faceted like a diamond, the truth is nothing is that simple.

06. Cutting - There is only one thing you really have to know about hair cutting and that is—don't try it yourself!

Styling and shaping is an art even the finest hairdressers admit has taken them a lifetime to master; the most honest add, "And I'm still learning."

Steal from your piggy bank if you must to finance an expert cutting. (Perhaps in the simple act of trying to carve out bangs you've already discovered the folly of putting scissors to your own hair.)

07. Brush-Up - Could you possibly resist an offer which guaranteed:

Free!! No coupons. No box tops. Shining, healthier, more manageable hair in a matter of weeks.

Plus these extra attractions:

Clearer skin. Dandruff routed. Dry or oily hair conditions improved.

Hardly.

08. Thorough Shampoo - Whether you're going to color, permanent, or set, every hair story with a beautiful ending begins with a thorough brushing and a good shampoo.

Just as you wouldn't dream of putting make-up on soiled skin, don't expect colors or curls to do their best work on hair that's not sparkling clean.

09. Vanishing Wave - Some fifty years ago, only the bravest of the fair ventured into dungeon-like beauty parlors to submit to the tortures of Mr. Nessler's new-fangled invention—the permanent wave. Swoons from the fumes were the order of the day, and the heaters which hung down from the red-hot "Iron Maiden" were so heavy only a few curls could be administered at a time.

10. Salon Vs. Home - Should you roll your own or budget for a fine salon permanent? Before you go into competition with a beauty parlor, consider the pros and cons.

The woman who can afford the economy of the very best should  consider a  fine  salon  permanent  first.  A twenty-five dollar permanent, four times a year, comes out to about twenty-five cents a day.

11. Beauty Salon - Some women spend a good part of their lives in beauty salons while others rarely go at all. Still others dispatch private planes equipped with butlers and steaming casseroles to transport their favorite hairdressers back to Newport or Easthampton for a midsummer styling.

12. Professional Setting - Once you know the basic dance steps, you're ready to attempt anything on the ballroom floor.

So, too, once you've mastered the basic pin curl and roller patterns, there's no limit to the number of hair styles you can copy or create.

Complex as many coiffures may seem, they are all merely infinite combinations of surprisingly few tricks with clips and rollers.

13. Never Say Dye - Nature may have given you dishwater hair and pale lips, but she also gave you an indomitable spirit.

Unless you are a member of a distinct minority you probably began experimenting with lipstick soon after you emerged from the cradle.

And, today, your most flattering hair color is very likely not the one nature gave you but one waiting in a bottle, ready to be released like a good genie to spread its colorful magic through your hair.

14. Gray Hair - "Only the good dye young." Barbara Stanwyck frequently turns a cliché when asked why she prefers to polish her silvery locks rather than to bleach or tint.

But, it's the rare stylist who would agree with the popular actress. Most believe there are few mature women with faces youthful enough to carry gray or white hair.

15. Match Make-Up - Suddenly your hair is the golden blonde, vibrant red or smouldering black of your dreams. But your old makeup only seems to clash.

In case no one has told you, new hair colors demand new make-ups. So erase your old color patterns from your mind and start studying an exciting new spectrum.

16. Problem Hair - Skin like a baby's may be every woman's lifelong desire. But hair like a baby's? Soft and silken as it may be to an admirer's touch, its picture-book wisps are more unmanageable than an unruly two-year-old. Ask any woman who must cope daily with this hair that just never grew up.

17. Sudden Curls - Last-minute dates, and all the frantic beauty preparations that precede them, are at least as old as the pyramids at Gizeh.

But, somehow, you're convinced that even if you were to live to be as old as the Parthenon, such romantic meetings would always find you with your hair down and out —of curl. The only really sound defense against the last-minute hairdo frenzy is a good offense. Have your hair reshaped at least once a month. Shampoo it daily, if neces-sary, to make sure it is constantly shining clean and "please-touch-me" gleaming.

18. Better Than One - Once an embarrassing necessity, then a mad craze, natural hair wigs are fast becoming an essential part of the busy woman's wardrobe.

Blonde actresses may have a closetful, one to match every mood, or color-cued to pet poodles, furs and jewels. Society hairdresser Claude's patrons may insist they need four: one the current color of their hair, one a contrasting shade, a red one for the subdued lights of nightclubs, and a whimsical shade, like pink "just for fun."

19. Vacation Hairdos - Half the fun of seeing Europe is doing what the natives do. But if you'd avoid an out-dated Brigitte Bardot cut in Paris, or frizz just about everywhere, take the first ladies' hairdressers route wherever you go and you'll have an exciting new hairdo as well as French perfume to bring through customs.

20. An Angel - While there's nothing so attractive as a head with every hair in place, there's nothing so unappealing as one which resembles chaos—especially when it lands in somebody else's soup. When you're on your way to a very special appointment and the wind wreaks havoc with your hair, there's always a nearby tearoom or hotel powder room to slip into in order to repair the damages.

THE END
